Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Disco II-Gas Gauge and Window, gas gauge, fuel gauge

Question
Hi Nigel,
My check engine light had been on for a couple of weeks.  Shortly thereafter, my passenger electric window stopped working and a couple of days later, my gas gauge stopped working.  Are these things related?  And, what course of action would you recommend for repair.  I am not a mechanic at all, so I will have to take it to a mechanic but I want to know a bit of what he's talking about and to make sure he is going down the right track.  I appreciate your expertise.

Answer
No, I do not think these things are related.  The window is more than likely a faulty window regulator (it is very common), but it could possibly be the window motor or window switch.

Your gas gauge has probably stopped working because the fuel gauge sender ynit has died.  This is also a common problem.  The sender unit is only sold with the fuel pump, so you would have to replace the whole fuel pump to fix it.

The check engine light cannot be diagnosed without hooking up a scanner to the car and retrieving the codes.  If you want to tell me what the codes are, I can give you some ideas.
