Land Rover Repair: 1996 Range Rover stuck in low gear, drivers seat, ecu

Question
QUESTION: I went to the car wash and my rover was running fine after the cleaning I went into leave the car started fine but when I drove out t seemed to be in low gear hitting 4K rpm's at 30 mph. The dash says shift into neutral and when I do that and put it in the middle  btw the shifting option and go back to the regular drive it is still stuck in low..What is going on. I have see the gearbox light come on but it does not stay on.

ANSWER: It sounds like your transfer box ECU has gone bad.  It is underneath the drivers seat.  Perhaps it got wet at some point during the wash or perhaps it is a coincidence that it happened after the car wash.  This is a very common failure.

QUESTION: How expensive is that to fix?

Answer
You would have to replace the transfer case ECU, it can't be fixed.  I would not recommend a used one unless you can get it for next to nothing, because the new ones are more robust.  I am not sure of the cost, you could call your local dealer for the price.  You should be able to just plug it in.  Before you buy a new one, try unplugging the ECU and spraying the connectors with electrical cleaner and plug it back in.

By the way, I just noticed your comment about the intermittent gearbox light.  This would be a separate problem.  It could be the transmission ECU, but you would have to retrieve a fault code to confirm.  If it is (it is right under the transfer case ECU), try the same steps as above.  You could try a used transmission ECU, though, if it is the problem and cleaning the connections doesn't work.
