Land Rover Repair: Clutch problem on a 1996 Discovery., clutch master cylinder, clutch assembly

Question
Hi there, whilst out driving round a very busy roundabout without warning the clutch pedal on my 300tdi disco went down to the floor and stayed there!! I lost all gears, couldn`t even force it in to limp home.I have been told to look for leaking hydraulic fluid, but cannot see any. Any thoughts on what part could have gone would be very much appreciated as the local garage want to charge an absolute fortune just to have a look!

Answer
Check to see that the clutch master cylinder has fluid.  If it does, then I would suspect a failure of one of the internal parts in the clutch master cylinder.  This is unlikely, because you probably wou;d see the fluid leaking out of the clutch pedal and onto the carpet/mat area.

Alternatively, if there is no fluid, the best colurse of action would be to fill the clutch master cylinder and pump the pedal to see where it leaks.  There could be a ruptured hose (most likely this would be an obvious leak).  If it leaks from the bell housing it could be a leaking slave cylinder or a collapsed clutch assembly.
