Land Rover Repair: 2002 Discovery II, testbook, oil light

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2002 Disco 4.0 Bosch engine with 108000 miles on it. I recently had the oil light come on at idle when warm. As long as the RPM's were above 1K it would go off. However at idle it was on with no knocking. I replaced the sending unit to no avail. I then went ahead and replaced to oil pump (front cover). Still the same. I have been told that it is the bearings and on the other hand I should just get a new sender (I've tried 2). Then I was told that if I run 5/40 synthetic I will be OK. I am very confused. Do I replace the bearings and if so do I need to pull the motor or do I run synthetics and try a new sender. There was no metal in the pan and I drove the car 7500 highway miles after the light came on at idle and 5000 while towing my 7K  lb boat.

ANSWER: Hi Vincent,

before I suggest you spend more money, I'd bite the bullet and have an experienced LR mechanic verify the fault.

IF you are looking for an independent LR mechanic, send me an email and I'll try to find one close to you.

Include your city/state/province.

Best of luck,

QUESTION: I actually did take the Disco to the dealer and they made the diagnosis of a bad oil pump. They wanted 1900 for the job so I did it myself. I live in Pacific Grove, CA. Thanks

Answer
Hi Vincent,

the french say 'merde' but not for luck.  Imagine if you had the dealer replace your pump...do you think they'd refund your $1900?

The only independents I know of near your locale is in SF.  Is it worth the drive north to find a good LR mechanic...most would say "you bet".
