Answer
Hi Tom,

I would first take a close look at the ignition system:

Check battery to make sure it holds a FULL charge.  Have it tested at Advance auto - they will do this for free.

Check starter solenoid main lead wire to ensure it is free of grit,
oil & dirt.  I had this happen to me.  If the main wire is frayed, replace it.  When the solenoid starts to fail, it goes much like you describe.

Check and replace spark plugs and wires - not enough spark or wires are arcing.  Old wires can give same symptoms.

Change oil - older oil makes starts more difficult.

Believe me, I live in Quebec Canada and know all about cold starts.

I have a very good battery with a high CCA rate.  Verify the CCA cold cranking amp rating of your battery.  It will help with cold starts.

The amperage you need to turn a cold engine over is quite high.  Make it easier for your starter by having clean oil, new plugs and wires and a fully charged battery.

IF the problem is not with the ignition, you'll have to look at the fuel injection.  Have it tested at a local garage.

At this point, you'll need help with a diagnostic system - autologic or testbook/T4.  LR dealership ($$$) or an independent LR mechanic will have this.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
