Land Rover Repair: 97 Disco Ignition Switch, shade tree mechanic, mechanical locks

Have a 97 Disco and its latest trick is that the ignition switch just turns continuously when the key is inserted.  The mechanical locks disengage and I am able to shift out of park.  Any idea on how I can get it started to get it to the shop. Failing that, how difficult is it to install a new ignition switch?  Is this something that the average shade tree mechanic can handle?  Thanks for the help.

Hi Doug,

If you are in a pinch, I would contact a local locksmith and see what they can do for you.

No doubt you'll have to replace the lock and the actual description is too much for this simple website.  Send me an email and I'll forward the techsheets for this weekend project.
