Land Rover Repair: 2001 Freelander TD4 Auto - Dash Lights, traction control systems, traction control

Question
Just found the site and I hope I'm not repeating a question. Periodically the amber 'HDC' and 'TC' lights light up and stay on for a while. They come on and off together and there seems no correlation with any road, driving or weather conditions. Sometimes they don't light for 4-6 weeks then light up for a few days. Sometimes restarting the engine clears them - sometimes it doesn't. Everything seems to work normally. This has been an irritation since about 2003! Thanks

Answer
The lights signal a problem with the hill descent and traction control systems of your car.  Those two systems share most components, so when one has a problem, they both have a problem.

When the light goes on, the fault is active.  When the light goes out, the fault is inactive.  But no matter what, the fault codes are stored in the computers.  Take your truck to a dealer or specialist with a T4 or Autologic system and have them read it.  You need that specialist Land Rover test system to talk to it and get answers.
