Volvo: oil leak, high mileage, oilly

Question
thanks for your time!!
I have a 97 960-6cyl-that has a oil leak that is getting on to the exhaust and smoking. I thought the oil leak was a bad gasket on the oil fill cap and leaking oil into the injector pan and then leaking out the back and then dripping on to the exhaust pipe, after replacing the oilfill cap gasket I still have a hot oilly smell but no smoke. I've driven the car 200 miles since replacing the gasket but still get the hot smell. Now I'm not sure if the oil will take a very long time to burn off the pipe or I have a leak somewhere else. I know the valve cover doesn't have a gasket but uses a sealant instead, I was going to reseal that if the job wasn't too technical and if you thought that was the most likely place to go next.
Again, thanks

Answer
Hello Dave! There could be a leak at the rear main engine seal. Also, check the rear cam seals. The oil pump seals may also be leaking. It is best to get all the oil cleaned off and try to track down. If the car has high mileage it is a good idea to replace the flametrap and/or breather box. I hope this info helps you.
