Land Rover Repair: tapping /rattling noise, land rover discovery 2, land rover discovery

Question
good day dennis

i have a 2000 land rover discovery 2, with 110,000 miles on it. the vehicle rides well, but it makes an annoying sound that's both present at startup, and when i give it gas. the vehicle was just in the dealership to fix a major oil leak, i mentioned the sound to the dealership, but they responded that they did not notice anything. but there is a definite rattling sound, which is quite noticeable when i pull up next to something, for example a wall. you can't hear it barreling down the highway though. at about 25 miles per hours and greater you can't hear it. the catalytic converter was replaced. i have read about rocker shaft problems. but i'm not familiar with what that is. please assist. thx kenneth spencer

Answer
Hi Kenneth,

It could be several things, it's possible something was damaged by low pressure from the leak (if it was on the pressure side of things).  The valve-train is a likely point for rattles, any good mechanic can look at your valves/lifters to determine if they're the source of noise, it doesn't have to be the dealership (who tend to not be interested in Rovers over 5 years old).
