Land Rover Repair: 96 disco tach and rear lights, terminal points, serpentine belt

aloha i just got a 96 disco 138,000 miles and i was driving it and the tach was at 3,000 rpm then it just died then it bounced then dead then works hmm! so what should look for ? and as far as my tails lights when the car is on and your looking at the lights the top of the lights are on  then u push the barake and nothing as far as brake lights but the  ones on the rear bumper comes on when it wants to the car was siting for around a year or so  well any help would be good thanks aloha carlos

Hi Carlos,

sounds like two problems here.  

If the tachometer is acting up, it can only mean the alternator is failing OR the serpentine belt is not correctly fed on the pulleys.  If it's not the belt then you should have your alternator tested to make sure it's charging properly.

The rear light problem you mention could be due to a blown lightbulb or corroded bulbholder(s).  Check the bulbs concerned and also look into the bulbholder to see if the terminal points are corroded.  This is common in older Disco's - and since your's has sat around for so long, it may be several bulbholder that are affected.
