Land Rover Repair: OBD1 Code Reader 1995 Discovery 1, land rover discovery, engine management system

Question
Hi John,
I am having a hard time finding a portable OBD1 code reader for my 1995 Land Rover Discovery 1. Is there such a thing? the nearest dealer is 6 hours away and would like to purchase one if reasonably priced.

The problem I'm having is loss of power and very hard on gas. So far, it's ben trial and error on the most common parts that could cause this. I've changed the following: 2 oxygen sensors, 2 catalytic converters, muffler, rotor, distributor cap, wires, plugs, thermostat, air filter, temp sensor...what next?...on OBD1 code reader? Could you suggest a brand name and model number for me and how much can I expect to pay.

Thanks for any advice that could help me. (Gas prices are killing me!!!)

Answer
There is no low cost reader for the older OBD I Rovers.

However, if you buy a factory workshop manual there is a long procedure by which you can test every single component of the engine management system with ordinary hand tools and a multimeter.

You can buy and download the service manuals online from www.landrovertechinfo.com or buy the printed book from one of the LR mailorder houses
