Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco II, rear suspension, discovery owners, gear man

Question
Hello Dennis,
I purchased my Disco II last July, and it is beginning to fall apart.  Recently, the rear end goes flat after the car is parked.  It seemd to be a common occurence lately.  After we start it up, it generally raises several minutes later.  This past weekend, while my wife was heading out of town, the suspension collapsed while she was driving, and she couldn't get it to elevate even when she pushed the button to raise the rear.  I have read some other peoples questions, and I need some more guidance.  I have checked the rear air bags and lines and detect no leaks, so I am wondering where the compressor is?  And if it is easy to rebuild.  Where should I start.  I am a gear man and I am very mechanically inclined, but I am not famiiar with Land Rovers.  Please help.

Answer
The sinking down overnight is a sign of leaky rear air-springs.  Leaving it go this long has probably killed the air-compressor and the system has gone into fault mode.  Unfortunately the DII compressor is not easily rebuildable, it was designed as disposable.

The compressor is under the driver, bolted to the frame rail.

New rear-springs will help, but you may need a new compressor unit as well.

Many Discovery owners opt for a coil spring conversion kit to eliminate the SLS.
