Land Rover Repair: 1995 disco, tranny fluid, transmission problem

Question
QUESTION: first, want to say it is great that you do this..you are helping alot of others...we purchased a 95 disco that they were unsure of the problem..she was driving down the highway..hear a clunk(as she described)they thought it was the transmission..well..tranny shifts fine..no problem..it makes almost a spinning or whining noise that is very loud..we were told to check the gear box and sure enough they was pretty much no fluid in it..it won't go into H or L so we are figuring we need to replace the gear box..wanted to ask what you thought about it..we aven't been driving it..do you think it would be ok to drive 12 miles when we drop it off for the repair? we had it towed home..my other questions are what else should be check out or be on top of? We are going to have the tranny fluid changed and a new tranny filter. Apparently the front sunroof had a leak and so the guy siliconed the sunroof..we cut the silicone and we can hear something going on but it won't move at all. I can feel the little roller thing on the front moving but it just says put..any ideas? And what options would I have for a key chain or keyless entry? They only had one key, we made a copy but it wouldn't work..I wonder if they have a chip in the key..?We are very happy to have a Land Rover..the one thing I notice is yes people complain..but they still love them..I don't mind putting money into a vehicle that I rally like..sorry for all the questions..I am getting educated on land rover quickly

ANSWER: First of all, with waht you say, I don't think the car should be driven anywhere.  Tow it to a properly qualified shop.  Note I stress "qualified."

If it does not go into high or low the transfer case linkage is probably frozen, rusted, from lack of use.  That does not tell you anythng about its internal condition.

If it whiles that's probably a transfer case or axle issue, not a transmission problem.  On the transmission . . . ZF (the maker of the unit) says it's better to just change fluid and leave the filter alone.  Just drain and refill it twice (running a minute in between) to get more fresh fluid in there.

The sunroofs were problematic in that year; you probably need the updated assembly.  $400+ from the dealer plus intallation. That's why it's glued shut, I'd bet.

QUESTION: I will not drive it..good to know. Our local Land Rover service manager told me that land Rover recommends to change the filter at 30k miles and no more..he said that he thinks it should be changed more often..every 30-50k miles regardless..interesting..I know you are very educated, it is interested they told me that. So would I buy another gear box/ Does it include the linkage? I have talked to car cannibals for parts and was just going to get another gear box and have it installed locally instead of trying to repair ours. I will take the sunroof in for repair them since i know that there was a problem with that year. Any other big issues we should beware of? I notice the back door sags..unsure if that's something that we could fix or not. My husband is good at some mechanics. he has replaced an engine before in a toyota. We'll take on some things, but not too much. Should I go to Land Rover for a keyless entry remote? Did they make them that year? I don't know how expensive they are. The airbag light is on and I read that they automatically go on after time to be serviced..but I have also been told that mechanics don't service airbags because of liability issues. I would tihnk if the light is on there is an issue??
thanks agan, Lyla

Answer
I would not just go buy a transfer case.  The frozen linkage is an external problem, not something in the box.

As to remote entry . . . your truck should have the remote entry system.  Take it to a dealer or LR speciaist with the proper T4 or Autologic system and have them program a set of remotes.  Should cost about $100-150 per remote to do.

Airbag lights do not "just go on" though they can be triggered by disconnecting the battery.  Have it checked and try clearing it.  You'll need a dealer or specialist for thst, too.
