Land Rover Repair: Disco 2 Service Engine Light, second guessing, catalysts

Question
I have 2004 Disco (60K miles) at start up runs rough, the service engine light starts blinking but then after 2 minutes or when it is warmed up runs fine.  Service Engine light goes solid.  Dealership wants $$ just to look at it.  Is this a simple sensor that has gone bad?  Thanks for the help.

Answer
Running rough and a flashing check light indicate a serious problem, one that could damage the engine or the catalysts or both.  If you continue to drive like that you should expect substantial repair costs from the subsequent failure.

This is probably not a simple sensor issue as you say.  I suggest you have it checked immediately, and be prepared for $500+ in costs, possibly a fair bit higher if you've been driving it a while.

If you have melted the catalyst by driving this way, that alone is $2,000.  That's why it's vital to address these problems when they occur rather than second guessing the light by questioning its meaning.

A flashing check engine light (in any modern car) indicates a potentially damaging problem.
