Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 (Manual) Doorlocks, land rover discovery 2, land rover dealer

Question
Hello John

To cut a long story short, my driver's side door lock is not responding to the auto-close and open when the vehicle moves off and not opening when the vehicle halts and the ignition is turned off. it still locks from the outside when the key remote is used but does not respond to the "open" button. the other three side door locks work ok and I'm assuming the rear door lock is ok. Turning the key in the lock will lock and unlock the door, but the "opening" turn feels a little stiff .

I've read on other sites that leaving the ignition on for 5 minutes without the engine running may cause the BCU to reconnect properly with the BeCM and rectify my problem. Before going to my local Land Rover Dealer 100 kilometers distant (I'm in Australia) I want to do what I can to fix or better identify the problem.

Am I likely to cause damage if I leave the ignition on for 5 minutes with the engine running, please? I've tried this for about 1 minute and I hear a low whirring sound behind the dashboard, like an electric motor running quietly, which made me nervous. Any advice you can provide will be appreciated.

Regards

John

Answer
Hi John,

leaving the ignition on position II for 5 minutes won't do much except drain your battery.  I'm not aware of any reprogramming sequence with series II Disco's - other than the dealership devices.  That low whirring sound could be environmental electronics, fuel pump should kick on too.

You'll probably have to replace the door lock (driver side) and it's not a simple job as you would imagine.  The tight spacing is a real knuckle buster.  I'd take the Disco to the nearest LR mechanic and have them do the job.  They'd make sure the key fob(s) work well with the new lock and you'll be done with the problem.

Try www.discoweb.org if you think you can do the work and need some tips and instructions.  I think they have many pages available on this subject.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
