Land Rover Repair: range rover 2003 4.4HSE, flat battery, throttle control

Question
When driving our car the battery warning light came up, 10 mins later we stopped, turned the engine off for approx. 2 hrs.  It started fine then we drove for 2 mins before ABS & other warning lights came up which made us pull over.  We turned the car off & it wouldn't restart (like a flat battery).  It did start soon after, we went 1/2 mile & lost all throttle control so we pulled over & the engine was spluttering & then died. The battery is now completely flat.  Have you any idea what it could be?  Alternator?  Thank you.

Answer
When the battery light comes on it usually means the alternator has stopped working.  Assuming the belt is still attached (if it were not, the motor would have overheated) that's probably your trouble.

The 2003 alternator is water cooled and quite costly.  Expect a $1,000+ job
