Land Rover Repair: 02 Freelander Transmission wont operate in reverse, forward gears, flash one time

Question
QUESTION: I recently had my 02 Freelander transmission drained, flushed and reserviced by a reputable service center. After driving home, I went to put into reverse but nothing happened. I can feel it engage but it seems that fluid flow to the torque converter is blocked or restricted.  I returned to the service center and had them check the servicing. It was good. What could be the probable cause? It works fine in all forward gears. I did get a 4F code flash one time while in reverse. There are no codes stored in the computer.

ANSWER: Did you use the correct fluid?  Freelander transmissions use special fluid, and we were told in service training that use of regular ATF would result in failure.

QUESTION: Yes, a synthetic brand recommended by Landover was used. Today, the service center who performed the work admitted that there mechanic improperly serviced the transmission and drove it.  While he was driving it , the F4 coded was flashing.  I walk in and he questioned me as to whether I had experienced the same I told him no and thats when I found out it had been underserviced. It is now in a transmission shop. Now they are saying the reverse in the transmission is out. Is this a common failure after only 61,000 miles? Or did the improper servicing and driving it cause the failure?

Answer
Without seeing your car, there is no way for me to know if improper service caused the failure.  The fact that the vehicle failed immediately after service does point that way, though.

I am sorry to say that we do see some 60k trans failures in Freelanders, even with proper service.
