Land Rover Repair: 96 disco cruise control, cruise control system, independent mechanic

Question
How do I turn on the cruise control for a 96 disco? Where is the turn on switch? What does it look like?

Answer
Hi Brandy,

for my '95 Disco, I have a switch on the dashboard that I must activate.  It is in the cluster of switches below the radio.  Once activated, a small red light will turn on within the switch itself.

Next, as I reach the desired speed, I have the set switch found on the steering wheel.  This locks in the speed.  IF there is no trouble with your cruise control (CC) system, the speed will be maintained.

Here is what the owners manual states:

The cruise control system has three switches; a master switch on the fascia panel and two control switches marked ’SET +’ and ’RES -’ mounted on the steering column.

To operate:

1. Press the master switch on the fascia panel (arrowed in illustration) - the indicator light in the switch illuminates whenever the switch is pressed to the ’on’ position.

2. Accelerate until the desired speed is reached. This must be above the system’s minimum operational speed of 28 mph (45 km/h).

3. Press the ’SET +’ switch to set the vehicle speed in the system’s memory. Cruise control will now maintain that road speed without the need for manual operation of the accelerator.

With cruise control operating, speed can be increased temporarily, e.g. for overtaking, by normal use of the accelerator. When the accelerator is released, road speed will return to the selected cruising speed.

I hope this helps,

NB: if you don't have a owner's manual, you should be able to order one from the dealer.  If you have trouble with the CC, you will need the services of a LR mechanic.  Send me an email and include the city nearest you.  I will try to find an independent mechanic close to you.  OTherwise, you can take your chances with the local LR dealership.
