Land Rover Repair: 87 wont start, jd powers, mint condition

Question
we're looking to buy an 87 range rover but the owner said it won't start unless some ether is sprayed on the engine. Otherwise the car is in mint condition. What could this be? and would it cost a lot to fix? And should we buy the car

Answer
Hi Nelson,

if you can't start any vehicle without spraying into the carb, you know there is a problem.  If you are considering to purchase this vehicle, you must realize that LR repairs are astronomical compared to N.American vehicles.  If you consult JD Powers and the owner surveys, you'll find that LR ratings are about the same as Kia's.  That's pretty low.

When the vehicle works, its magic.  When it breaks down, its a nightmare (or a dealer's good fortune).

If this is your primary vehicle, save your money and find something more reliable. If its a toy you want to restore, expensive hobbby, it could be that the plugs, wires and even the coil are in need of replacement.  Weak battery and alternator may also be a factor.  If you do these repairs yourself, it could be manageable in cost - you can purchase rebuilt alt and coil or go with $$$ original from LR dealer.  www.car-part.com is a good resource for salvaged parts.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
