Land Rover Repair: Landrover Discovery 2000 Dash Error Light Mystery, temperature gage, differential lock

Question
Hi! Thanks for your help. I have an error light that illuminates in red when I step on the brakes but it is not in the manual and I'm hoping you can provide insight. It looks like the four tires with a circle in the middle with an x in the circle. It appears on the lower left of the dash, directly above my temperature gage. I topped up my fluids but that didn't help. The vehicle seems to drive fine but I know from experience not to drive when an error is red vs. amber. What could it be? I also have a funny noise when I turn the steering wheel tight to the right(i.e. a u turn) but the light does not go on then, but I could imagine the dash symbol is perhaps a steering wheel sign of some sort? Could they be related? If so, why does it only go on when I step on the brakes? It doesn't make any sense and two mechanics were baffled and both told me just to take it to the dealership. Uugh! I'd rather not. Any insight would be great. Thanks! Meg

Answer
I think that's for the transfer case, possibly the Center Differential lock if yours has one (diagrams on the transmission by the xfer case shifter will show how to put it in lock if you have a lock)  If the shifter is out of normal driving position braking may make it move just enough to trip the switch.
