Land Rover Repair: extended? Warranty Info, land rover dealership, repair leaks

Question
I have a 2000 Land Rover Disco w/100,000 miles on it. It has been somewhat of a nightmare since driving it off of the lot two years ago. (The service engine light came on literally as it left the lot!) So today I am taking it in to have the brakes checked, the truck was shaking and when we got home the front pass. and back drivers wheels were hot as fire! The fan in front of the radiator, (can see through grill) has not moved in months, can tell from bug splatter! So anyway, I did not buy any extended warranty since it was not even a Land Rover dealership that I bought it from and the nearest dealership is at least two hours away. Not to mention when I did take it the ripped me off and still did not fix it correctly. Now have a local shop doing the work, much cheaper and seems to be MUCH better service! So FINALLY the question is, can I get a good legitimate warranty out there that will cover as much as possible on this vehicle and still let me take it to this local mechanic? Oh, and yes, I still love this truck, but I am beginning to wonder just how much!

Answer
Hi Greg.

My experience with extended warranties has me running away from them.  I don't trust them at all.  They are overpriced and come with so many conditions for their protection - not yours.

Sounds like your brakes have seized.  Could it be the master cylinder?  Fan not moving?  Have that fixed too!  Overheating engine can lead to big repair bills - just what the dealer likes!

I once purchased a WYNN extended warranty - it had so many restrictions that I never was able to use it for my older Disco.  For me, it was a complete waste of money.

I would invest in finding a good independent LR mechanic.  Keep the vehicle well maintained, repair leaks and keep fluids clean.

Just saw a TV expose on warranties - they should be regulated and investigated!  Keep your gaurd up if you opt to buy one.  I will never buy one again.

The problems you describe are common and I would say many LR owners have the same reaction - love the ride, hate the repairs.  When will LR get this vehicle right?

Best of luck,

JohnMc
