Land Rover Repair: Just bought my first LR Disco 98 - Qs, differential lock, technical bulletins

Question
So I bought a 98 Discovery.  It has 93000 miles on it.  Some of the problems that I see, is firstly the differential light is on all the time.  It rides fine and doesn't feel like it is locked.  So I try to put it in "locked position" but can't move it over there at all.  It just goes from High to Low, in unlocked (but light is still on).  I'm not sure if I should include the other problem I have as typing it all out from your end maybe to clumbersome.  I would love to get my Rover in the best condition it could be so any general things I could do to get this would be great.  Thanks in advanced.

Answer
Hi Marcus,

welcome to the world of LR (some say large repairs).  bad joke.

Make sure to give your Disco a name (long-standing LR tradition).

Find yourself a trustworthy, independent LR mechanic and shop.

Make sure you register your ownership with Land Rover HQ - easy to do: visit local LR dealer and let them know you are the new owner.  At the same time, ask them to verify that your vehicle has had all recall work performed.  It will give you a good introduction to how helpful (or not) the dealer can be.

As for diff light problem, it could be an electrical short with the diff lock sensor.  They have been known to fail and prevent you from locking the diff.  Could also be a lubrication related problem.  You may need some LR expert to fix this.

Go to www.discoweb.org and search the Disco technical bulletins for "differential lock".  There is a step by step procedure that may fix this problem.  It requires you to open up your floor console.  Thread title "How to remove console to access/repair CDL on a Disco 1".

As for other problems...bring 'em on.
