Land Rover Repair: 03 Discovery SE vibration, transmission area, ac system

Question
Hi - I have a few questions for you. First, I have an 03 Discovery SE, 45,000 miles, just out of warranty.

1) I have noticed a vibration/ shuddering upon accelerating at about 30 MPH.  It seems to come from the front end, although my husband thinks it may be in the transmission area.  It doesn't happen every time I accelerate - fairly sporadic, so far.  No vibration at any other speed, or when the vehicle is slowing down.  Any ideas?
2- A/C issues... the AC/heating unit seems to be stuck on "auto" - I can still adjust the temperature and vents, but it's always on "auto."  Also, when the system is off, a few times we've noticed the defroster blowing hot air - I have had a LR Dealer look at the system about 6 months ago because of a "ball dropping" sound when I turn the system off or if my speed gets above 60 MPH.  They said it's normal--- but it never made this noise before 40K miles.  What do you think the "ball drop" sound is?  Is the ball jamming the system open so the defrost blows even when the AC system is turned off?

3 - I have also had some ignition issues - occasionally the key won't turn and the wheel is locked - seems to work eventually.  LR said they couldn't duplicate the problem.  Guess a new ignition barrel is called for?

Thanks!  Krista

Answer
Hi Krista,

the vibration may be u-joint or front driveshaft related.  Suspension shop or LR dealer can verify this.  You could try driving a short distance with the diff locked (no more than 45mph) - just to see if vibration is removed.  Usually this confirms it.

AC - could be electronic switching jam.  "Ball dropping" is interesting... could be the intake door is jammed or something is wrong with the way it opens and closes.  Heating coming in sounds like its jammed open.

Ignition barrel may be in need of lubrication or even replacement.  You could try a local locksmith and ask if lubricant is necessary.

I once had the key break off in the ignition. I called a locksmith who removed the key then put some fine lube oil on the new key and inserted it into my ignition.  Worked ever since.

I hope this helps and best of luck,
