Land Rover Repair: Rear Suspension & ABS/TC/HD warning lights, land rover north, mahwah nj

Question
I have 2001 LR Disc II. Back in January, my ABS, traction control and hill decent light started turning on. I took it to the dealer and was told the ABS Modulator needed to be replaced which I did. About 2 weeks ago, the lights are on again and now the rear of the vehicle constantly drops. It normally rises after about 5 minutes of driving, but lately, it takes longer to rise. It got so bad today, I had to rent a car until Monday when I take my car into the shop for service. Any thoughts?

Hi Dania,

it's quite possible that your problem was with the air suspension and not with your ABS modulator.  It's also possible that you have two separate (and expensive) problems that have, unfortunately, arisen.

What you described here is a suspension problem.  Could be an air leak within an airbag of one of your air spring shocks or a leak somewhere in the air pipes.

I mention that it could have been an air leak problem originally because the two systems share components.  Here's what the LR workshop manual has to say:

"The system is controlled electronically by an ECU which is shared with the ABS system and known as the Self
Levelling and Anti-Lock Braking System (SLABS) ECU. The system operates by using an air supply unit to inflate or
deflate the air springs to maintain a constant ride height."

You are within your rights to complain to LR that the original work did not solve the problem and that you paid for a modulator that was probably not faulty.  LR will probably argue that the component was faulty and that this is a separate problem.

You may be fortunate to have a dealer honest enough to admit that there is a possibility of error in the original diagnosis.  Sometimes, this happens and an honest dealer will agree to some sort of arrangement.  I hope this is the case for you.

If you are dissatisfied with your dealer's actions on these repairs, you can escalate the problem to LR head office and seek some sort of settlement.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
