Land Rover Repair: Possible starter problem, land rover dealer, freelander land rover

Question
I have a 2003 Freelander Land Rover. Tonight after the car was parked for about 2 hrs., it just wouldn't start. No warning was detected. I had driven it several times today with no problems. There is a clinking noise when the key is turned in the ignition. Is it possible that it is the starter or celluloid? It won't take a jump to start it. If it is either of these, does it cost alot to fix it. Can we do it ourselves or do I have to take it to a Land Rover Dealer?

Answer
Starter failures are pretty common in Freelanders.  You can check with a test light to see if there's power at the starter when you turn the key.  If so, rap the starter with a broom handle and it will probably free up and work a bit longer.

I don't know your skill level so I can't say if you could do it yourself.  You may want to buy a day's access to Land Rover's official service website, www.landrovertechinfo.com and read the procedures to make an informed decision
