Motorcycle Repair: It wont start, kawasaki nija, e mail address

Question
I have a 2004 Kawasaki Nija ZX-6R. The bike was in a wreck a little over a year ago. It appears to be cosmetic damage (fairings, cluster, headlight, etc.) I haven't started the bike since the day it went down and now I have decided to fix it. The bike wouldn't start, so I figured it was because there was no instrument cluster. I bought one and it cranks but doesn't seem to start. My buddy decided it would be a good idea to spray starting fluid into the intake and the bike did fire up for a brief second and then died. It powers up, cranks, and I can smell gas so I am pretty sure it is getting gas. I checked all the fuses and they are all ok. I checked the oil level and changed it and with the exception of the from brake fluid canister bieng empty because the hose ripped during the accident, all the fluid levels are ok. During the crank period on the bike there is a light on the cluster that says FI and it flashed, but only during crank. I don't remember it doing that before but I could be wrong. I am at a loss. I don't want to take it to the dealer for a very expensive repair that I may be able to do myself. Do you know what I am doing wrong or what I should try before finally leaving it to a true professional? Is there a reset switch on the bike someplace I may have missed? Does the headlight assembly have to be plugged in as a safety measure. My e-mail address is mel1282@comcast.net and my name is Ron. Any information or advice you could give me would be much appreciated. Thank-you

Answer
Hi Ron,

I suspect the fuel has varnished and is causing fuel pressure issues or obstructed injectors.

Even if you smell the odor of gasoline, that does not mean fuel is being vaporized by the injectors. Fuel droplets may be forming instead, resulting with a non-starting condition.

Tests should be performed to identify the problems. I recommend that you have a local tech perfrom these tests. Dealers have the special tools necessary for testing.
