Land Rover Repair: gearbox fault, fault message, workshop manuals

Question
My RR 4.6 will not start anymore, I am getting a gearbox fault message. What can I do to fix it at home rather than going to the shop?

Answer
The only reason I can think of that a gearbox fault would prevent starting is if the truck can't tell if it's in neutral or park.

If you want to try and figure it out yourself you can spend $18 to buy a day's access to Land Rover's service website, www.landrovertechinfo.com and you can download all the workshop manuals.

I'd point you in the direction of a problem with the gearshift cable and linkage based upon what you say, but you'd really need a shop with the Land Rover test system to talk to the transmission computer and see what it's thinking.
