Land Rover Repair: P38 auto transmission, discoweb org, prop shaft

Hi John, Just bought a p38 4.0l se n reg 1995 v8 petrol front prop shaft is removed (broken) and we put her on blocks.. runs very sweetly but gearbox shows problems. When put in P loud grinding noise N R D 1 2 3 all no noise. I would have thought that there would have been some engagement when in these gears but appears not to do so... is gearbox mullered? cheers any help greatfully accepted.

Hi Jan,

I had a similar problem with my '95 Disco.  Mine would have a low grinding noise when I engaged 1st gear (I have a 5 speed manual), so I suspect that it is similar to yours.  Noise increased tempo as I changed gears.  I stopped short of driving it to the point where the prop shaft got bungled.  I had to replace the transfer gearbox to fix this problem.
