Land Rover Repair: Disco 1 brakes, late model cars, dot4

Question
QUESTION: I have a discovery 1 with braking issues. It has jsut started that when you hit the brakes the pedal travels really far when you hit the brakes but, if you let up and hit them again, the travel is normal and the car stops normal. Even with the with the long pedal travel the car still has stops it just has a lot of travel. The antilock light is randomly coming on but even when it is on the antilocks still work. The other problem is that they work when they shouldn't. Any advice you can give would be wonderful. Thanks so much
Patrick

ANSWER: It sounds like you need to start by bleeding the brake system carefully and properly.  That will probably solve the pumping up of the pedal.  I'd suggest you start there.

QUESTION: I replaced all of the fluid with new Dot4 and bled the brakes starting with the one with the longest line and worked my way down. Now I only have the long pedal travel a few times a trip. It seems like after I use the brakes once it will have normal feel and travel for a few minutes, but if I go 15 minutes down the interstate it has long travel again. The abs is also activating most times that I stop right at the end when I'm slowing passed the 5 mph mark. Can somthing in the abs going bad to cause my pedal travel? Sorry for having to ask a fllow up but thank you for your help

Answer
At this point, you probably need to follow the bleeding procedure in the Land Rover workshop manual.  If you don't have a factory manual you can rent a day's access at www.landrovertechinfo.com and download all the information you want.

There is more to the order of bleeding than just "farthest line first" because of the ABS system.  That's true for many late model cars, not just Rover.  You really have to follow the manufactorer steps carefully.
