Land Rover Repair: range rover 3.9 engine flooding, coolant temperature sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor

Question
hi there, wonder if you could help, i have a 1990 3.9 efi with a lpg conversion on it, from cold it starts first time but if left on petrol after a couple of minuates starts to stutter then stalls, if i am at a junction and can rev it sometimes i can catch it but if left to tick over there is a strong smell of petrol and it stalls and then takes 5 min of cranking to start again. i dont think its a gas prob cos if i switch to gas soon after starting its ok. im quite sure it must be a sensor. this can also happen when warm as well

Answer
Hi Garry,

could it be the coolant temperature sensor?  I know that this temp sensor changes the pulse width on the injectors.  So the colder it is, the longer it leaves them open.

"Engine coolant temperature sensor
The engine coolant temperature sensor is located in the front of the thermostat housing. The sensor provides engine coolant information to the ECM. The ECM increases the injector opening time when cold to provide improved driveability, and reduces the opening time as the engine reaches normal operating temperature."

Hope this helps,
