Land Rover Repair: Defender a/c condenser fans not working, condenser fans, mechanical clutch

Question
on my defender, the a/c condenser fans are not kicking in though i know they work as i have tested them, also the compressor clutch is not engaging. what could be the problem?

Answer
Hi Pete,

the clutch is controlled by a thermostat on the evaporator.  I think the fans are likewise controlled this way.

"A thermostat is positioned in the airflow leaving the evaporator to sense the temperature of the exterior fins. Should ice begin to form, due to a too cold condition, it will signal to disengage the electro-mechanical clutch on the compressor (1)."

Could be the evaporator or this thermostat that is causing these symptoms.

Best of luck,
