Land Rover Repair: Power Steering Pump Problems, piston slap, fuel injection problems

Question
How can you tell if your bearings are bad in your power steering pump.  Also my 99 Disco has a knocking sound to it what are a couple of things I could check to try and fiqure out the problem

Answer
Hi Todd,

to determine if your PS bearings are bad, look for fluid leakage around the pump.  Also, remove the serpentine belt and then spin the PS pulley - if the bearings are seizing, you'll hear or feel a slight grinding.  Pulley should spin freely and without any wobble.

Engine knock could be attributed to the following:

worn main bearings, piston slap*, water pump/PS pump/alternator failures, ignition timing, spark problems, fuel problems, carbon build-up, fuel injection problems, vacuum leaks.

I hope the noise you hear is associated with the PS pump.  It's rare that they fail but they eventualy do.  Consider buying a salvaged one if the dealer price too ridiculous.
