Land Rover Repair: 95 Land Rover alternator, land rover discovery, interstate battery

Question
I have a 95 Land Rover Discovery. I had a new alternator put one about two to three years ago and ever three to six months I have to get it rebuild. They tell me that it is burning the  regulator out. Ever time before i take it to the shop to have it looked at it will start sputtering really bad and then cut off and after it sits and cools off it will start back and run for five to ten minutes then cut back off.

Answer
Hi Rocky,

I had similar trouble with my '95 Disco alt.  After 3 alts, I decided to rebuild the alt and replace the batter with a new Interstate battery.  I also replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner.  This seemed to do the job as it's been 3 years and I've not had to replace the alt since.

I was once told that a weak battery can damage the alt on our Disco's.  The mechanic said that if you suspect a weak battery, change it quickly or you'll be burning out the alt regulator.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
