Land Rover Repair: inertia switch..., inertia switch, new range rover

Question
Hello there,
I'm a new range rover owner---a 95 county LWB. I love it. However, so far
I've had several problems, the most recent having the engine cut out while I
was stopped at a light. After about 20 tries restarting, I finally got it to stay
on...so I drove home. I noticed that I kept stalling at lights, this time I was
able to turn car back on though ( I refueled after i stalled the first time
thinking perhaps my gas gauge wasn't working correctly, I was low...)
Anyways, my mechanic walked me thru over the phone to the inertia switch--
i pushed it, and now the car seems to be fine. My question is, why did this
happen all of a sudden? I had driven on the freeway for 10 miles or so, then
on sidestreets for 15 minutes before this happenned. I did not hit any
potholes or speedbumps right beforehand either. I did go over a few speed
bumps the other day, but if that is whaty triggered the switch, wouldn't I have
stalled out sooner??? Just trying to understand these cars. Right now, a love/
hate relationship!!! Any other possible "surprises" I can expect?
thanks so much~M

Answer
Hi Monika,

it could be a security problem within your Rangie.  The Inertia Switch is part of the security system, much like the sensors on door and bonnet (hood).  With older LR's, I've seen security component faults due to electrical corrosion.  Perhaps this is root of the problem.  It could be that the security system encountered a fault and by resetting the Inertia Switch, the fault disappeared.

If this problem reappears, you should have your Rangie's security system inspected by a qualified LR technician. Perhaps they can isolate the wire or component that is triggering this problem.

As for the love/hate relationship, we all share these same feelings for LR's.  They are sophisticated vehicles that require more maintenance and attention as they get older.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
