Land Rover Repair: Discovery Series II (facelift), discovery series ii, high gears

Question
Dear Mr. McInnis,

I have a Td5 manual Series II Discovery. About a year after purchasing the car, it began to occasionally lose power when driving for a long time with the air conditioner on. The RPMs were normal, but the power was not transferring to the wheels and instead there was a gushing sound as air seemingly rushed out of the engine. It was taken to the dealer and they could not identify the problem as it was only temporary and corrected itself after the car was idle war a while. It continued occasionally doing this for two years, but was never really a big concern as it would correct itself and the LandRover dealer never showed much interest. Two days ago, the car was in first gear going up a hill and lost power, again RPMs normal, but the power not being transferred to the wheels.  Now it is completely gone.  the car starts normally, no warning lights, but when put in gear, it does not engage and one can even take the clutch out when the car is in gear and it does not stall.  This is the case in both low and high gears.  Additionally, the power steering is gone!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
Kole

Answer
Hi Kole,

sounds like you've lost your clutch.

I had mine replaced and it cost me about $2500.  That rush sound could have been the clutch plate .  I'm not 100% on that.

Check your serpentine belt to see if that's slipping and causing you to loose power steering.

Best of luck,
