Land Rover Repair: Cracked subframe, freelanders, rear subframe

Question
Hi John,
I have a 1999 Landrover Freelander 3 door soft top. I recently noticed a unusual "cracking" noise while driving, more so when turning. When i took it to the landrover mechanic, i was told it was a crack rear subframe. I would just like to ask, should this "just happen"? I am not sure that this is normal for something like this to break - and is it ok for them to weld a piece over it to fix it? im not sure that this is legal?

Answer
Hi Anastasia,

it's rare.  I've never heard about this problem before with Freelanders.

As for rewelding and fortifying the subframe, it should be alright and I don't know of any laws that prevent this.  It seems to be the quickest and least expensive solution.  If done right, it should be almost good as new.

I've known mechanics and welders who could repair certain cracks and leave the work even better!

If the LR dealership is confident that the weld will hold, I'm sure you'll be ok.   Just watch the area after the work is completed - just to be sure.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
