Land Rover Repair: 95 Disco O2 Sensors (how many & where?), fuel mixture, rich smell

Question
Dlr said my left "upstream O2 sensor" was bad & needed to be replaced... They wanted $ 570.00 to do the job. I told them no thanks, picked the car up and it ran fine for a month until... today. Same problem again...Fuel mixture super rich, smell of gas coming out the tailpipe etc. I made it to work, crawled underneath at lunch, cleaned the wires on the two before the cats and it rand perfect. I don't understand it. Anyhow, are these the only O2 sensors, or are there others up in the engine somewhere? I can only see the two (l/r) jsut before the cats, so I'm wondering if these are the "upstream" or are there others before these two further up the line. I apreciate your help. Thanks again!

Answer
Your 95 only has two o2 sensors.  Bad o2 sensors won't usually make it run real rich, though.  There is probably something more going on.  You might want to seek out a shop that will put some more care into diagnosis, but prepare yourself for a bigger bill.  If it takes 3-5 hours to sort out, plus parts, that $570 will seem cheap.

Still, $570 for nothing, or $770 for a fix . . .

The "o2 sensor thing" is just someone's quick guess.  Good diagnostics cost money.  It's a tough choice.
