Land Rover Repair: 2001 Discovery 3 amigos problem, wheel sensors, wheel hub

Question
Hi John,

I see many other owners are also still facing the 3 amigos problems (ABS+TC+downhill ascent lights on.  My LR dealer is a long drive from here.  Do you have any recent suggestions that a local mechanic that does some LR repairs might try?

My driver door lock is no longer functioning from the key and the SRS light has been on for what seems like decades.  At the last service, the dealer told me "to ignore that."  Niiiice, huh?

Answer
Hi Mrs.H.,

hard to read LR dealers. Some are helpful, some apt and succinct and some are just curt.

As for the 3 amigos (ABS, TC, HDC) I understand your situation.  Local mechanics are usually reluctant to work on LR's for fear of errors and subsequent customer disappointment.  IF you are fortunate to find a garage willing to do the work, you should make sure they have some experience with LR's.

Tracking down this problem is difficult for most LR dealers, so an independent garage would have even more trouble.  Part of the reason is due to the expensive diagnostic equipment that LR dealers use and general mechanics do not have.

If you local mechanic has experience with LR's, he would have to check the ABS modulator, the wheel sensors, the hub and axle seals.  Make sure the brake components (master C, calipers, pads, lines and fluids) are all in top conditon too.

A few owners have mentioned that a leaking axle seal may result in contaminents getting into the wheel hub and eventually causing the wheel sensors to trigger faults.  Examine wheel sensors to determine that they are free of contaminents and only hub lub is present in hub.

As for the drivers door...we all have these troubles.  I suspect it could be your lock tumbler or perhaps the latch itself.   $120 to $200 was an estimate I was given by my dealership.

The SRS light is troubling.  Find another dealer who can address this problem.  It may be the sensors in the engine compartment or the wiring that are at fault.  Althought its been 'on' for some time, the SRS light indicates a fault that may affect the deployment of safety features in your vehicle.

It's true, some owners ignore the light.  Others, disconnect the airbag feature by removing the fuse.  I would suggest that you find a dealer who can fix this problem rather than ignore it.

At one dealership I went to, instead of repairing the problem, they removed the dashboard light.  When I discovered this, no one admitted the action.  Dealership did charge me for a new bulb.  arggghhhh!!!!

Best of luck,

JohnMc
