Land Rover Repair: 97 discovery, stuck in park, handbrake

my wife was backing out of driveway and stop,she put it in park and left the
engine running and talked to our neighbor for about five minutes,after talking
she tried to put it in reverse but its stuck in park. can you please help.

That can happen if you park on a hill and bind the cable.  You can end up damaging the gear change cable doing that.  When on a hill, always set the handbrake, let the vehicle roll against the brake, then select park.

Also, check your brake lights - if you blew a fuse or lost the switch the park interlock won't release.  No brake lights = no shift from park
