Land Rover Repair: 96 disco starter let go?, tick tick tick, tick sound

hey John, I own a 96 disco. recently when driving it I would hear a tick-tick-tick sound comming from engine compartment on passenger side low it would increase in speed and volume when I would press accelorater pedal. I originally thought exhaust. But then I started the truck one day and It started very lound and violently. it did this subsequently 4 or 5 more times and now will not start. the key turns over but the only noise is a high pitched whirring sound comming from the starter. What to do, What to do? replace the starter?

The whine noise is probably the sound of a failed starter.  I'd start there, and check for an exhaust leak or lifter noise on the other issue.

When you pull the starter out check the flywheel for damage, as it could have failed instead.  That's rare, though.
