Land Rover Repair: 95 disco, intermittent loss, dirty fuel

Question
Dear John,  I just bought a used 95 disco with about 50t miles on the odo. Aside from the knocking sound on the engine it's in excellent condition, especially the interior and trimmings. The sound becomes louder as the engine warms up.  What could be causing it?

The fuel pump is humming up quite loudly and I actually experienced loosing rev intermittently when i brought it home.  Could a failing fuel pump or dirty fuel filter causing this intermittent loss of rev/power?

I have budgeted about US$2-3t for parts (service in my country is inexpensive) and my neighbor is an ex-Rover mechanic.  Which parts do you think I should spend this budget on to make this truck road worthy for long journeys?

Best,

RANDY V.

Answer
Hi Randy,

could be fuel related.  This vehicle had a fuel tank recall last year, so you may qualify for a new fuel tank and fuel pump.  A nice savings if it solves your problem.

The knocking you hear may be premature ignition.  Could be timing related.

Send me an email and I'll give you more detailed advice on this.
