Mercedes: 1979 non turbo diesel 300 TD wagon, turbo diesel, negative terminal

Question
I just acquired a 1979 non turbo diesel 300 TD wagon.  The alternator cord plug needs to be replaced and so although the alternator and battery are new the battery has to be charged upon starting.  What would be the best kind of battery charger to use?

Answer
Holly,
If the alternator is not providing charge to the battery during driving. Then you are subject to being left stranded. The vehicle operates on the alternator. The battery is essentially used to provide starter power and operate the accessories when the alternator is not providing full amperage such as when it is idling.
A small 20 amp charger would be ok to keep the battery fresh while parked. Just make sure to clip the positive to the positive terminal and negative to the negative terminal.
This type charger will not produce enough amperage for starting the vehicle with a dead battery.
Good Luck
Robert
