Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco with multiple problems, testbook, frame problem

Question
I have three simple questions (hopefully):

1.  My right passenger window slipped off track. Please give me instructions on how to fix it.

2.  My keyless remote does not work.  I have changed the battery in it.  Do I need to program it for it to work again?

3.  My passenger lock does not lock.  I have to manually push the lock down.  Is there a quick fix for it?

Now for the hard question.

Last night when I was headed home from work my truck would not start.  I go a jump and was able to make it home.  After getting home I cut off the truck and it would not crank again.  Is that the battery or the alternator?

Also my heater does not work.  Well, it works for like 5 minutes then it blows cold air.  What do you think is the problem and how do I fix it?

Answer
Hi Tina,

Problem 1: Passenger window off track.

You have to determine what has caused the window to go off track.  To do so, you'll have to remove the door panel and examine the window lift system.  Could be that the bottom frame has corroded and the glass is not seated properly.  A close inspection should reveal the cause.  Carefully raise and lower the window ONLY if the glass is not in jeopardy of jamming against its frame.

Problem 2 :  Keyless remote not working.

I believe that only the dealer can help here.  This problem may even be linked to the your starting problem.  The dealer can verify if the "spider", a black box of relays that link to various components (ie: securty, ignition coil...).  It may just be be the security ECU ... hopefully a trained LR mechanic can diagnose this with the LR testbook and various other tests.

Problem 3:  Passenger door lock.

This may be the lock actuator that is faulty.  These have been known to fail.  There is no quick fix.  Again, you'd have to remove the door panel (while inspecting the window in problem 1) and determine if the lock is working when the console button or drivers door lock are activated.  I think there is a way to adjust the lock but this is best left to someone with experience (LR mechanic).  The longest upright rod is threaded and this is a way to adjust the locking capability.

Problem 4:  Disco won't start.

It sounds like the starter or starter solenoid BUT with the description of problem 2, I am thinking it could be the "spider" that is at fault.  Repairing the spider involves removing a great deal of the dashboard - something not advised for the inexperienced DIY'er.  You can always have a local garage test out the starter solenoid while on the Disco.  If they are good mechanics, they would know how to bypass the ignition system to at least test the starter and it's solenoid.

Problem 5:  Cold air from heater.

Could be your heater matrix.  Again, a labour intensive job best suited for a LR mechanic.  A local mechanic could test to see if your cooling system is working properly (thermostat is opening, etc..).

Best of luck,

JohnMc
