Land Rover Repair: Engine problems with 99 range rover, light flash, o rings

Question
Hello,
Thank you very much for your response.  I just wanted to tell you that as i was going to the store to put some more oil in my car my car was making a loud ticking sound and like i never heard before and before I got to the store my car just shut down and I was left stranded on the side of the road. It sounded like there was basically no oil going through the engine. The shop now says that the oil pump that is the problem now. Should there be any reason that my car would be completely dry of oil only after twenty days?? What do you think is the reason for there being no oil? The smoke was more a blueish whiteish color. More blue than white. First when we first brought the car to the shop they fixed the upper plintum (I think how you spell it), and the upper gaskets, and replaced the O-rings. When I got the car back that is when the check engine light started flashing? Do you think there is something they could have messed up to make the light flash? Then we took the car to change the oil and they did.  After they changed the oil it started to smoke majorly. Then on the 24th of January the car broke down. After all of this explanation do you think they might have messed up the engine in any way to make it in the condition it is now. And I am still wondering about the ticking noise could it maybe be the manifold or what. Before we took it to them it never ticked! And if you have any advice that would be great! Thanks a lot and I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions! Thanks again Corey!

-----Question-----
Hello,
I have owned a 4.0 Range Rover and have a few problems just as most rovers do.  My Rover was running great and I noticed that my check engine light was on so I took it to this place and they said they knew what the problem was and they took a while, and when I went to go pick it up I started driving down the road and the service engine soon light came on and this time it was actually flashing.  I have never seen this happen before. So i took it back and said that they forgot to to reset it.  I then went to buy some oil for an oil change and they changed it.  When I got my car back the engine light is still blinking and now I notice that there is a loss of power and there is a engine nock whenever I press the gas or let off the gas. I also noticed that there was a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust as well. Then the oil light came on and so I checked the oil and the dipstick was rusted and there was basically no oil!  Now they say the best thing to do is replace the whole engine.  I don't want to get rid of this beautiful car and was just wondering if you  have an explanation for any of my problems?  I am just having trouble seeing how my car can be running this poorly and before I took it into the shop it was running almost perfect!  Or if you could give me any advise that would be great! Thanks a lot! Corey

Hello Corey,
Sorry about the delayed response, been busy...It's really hard for me to say what the exact problem is.
Flashing check engine light indicates a catalyst damaging misfire condition. The loss of of power is a result of misfire. Does not matter if the shop resets the light, if the problem is not fixed, the light WILL come back. Misfire can be caused by vacuum leaks, ignition wires, spark plugs, mass air flow sensor and others. Could be also internal engine problem ie. sticking valves or engine block problem. How many miles did you drive since the oil change when you noticed that there is no oil in engine?? The smoke may indicate that the engine burns oil, coolant or running rich. Is the smoke blue (oil burning), white (coolant burning), or black(running rich)? The different colors may indicate different problems. It would help if you told me what the shop exactly did prior all these things happening.

Answer
The oil pump does not make the oil disappear form the engnine, it may only cause low or high oil pressure. The engine must burn the oil internally. If they only replaced the upper plenum gasket, I do not see any relation between the performed work and the oil consumtion issue. There is no way that I can tell you if they did something wrong. Get a second opinion for a different shop. Good luck!
