Land Rover Repair: 1994 Discovery starter removal, starter removal, extension pipe

Question
I see you replied about removal of a starter and stated it had 3 bolts.  Mine looks like this with two bolts.
http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/F500054552OEA.JPG  It looks like it might use a star bit but it's very hard to see and I can't see the top one at all.  The wire between the starter and solenoid has burned in two and I need to remove it to repair.  How can I get to to the top bolt?

Answer
Hi Don,

your right. There are only 2 bolts actually holding the starter onto the engine.  The other bolt I mention is the battery lead bolt (which makes three) that has to be removed.  Yes it is a 'star' bolt and it is best removed using ratchet extensions (230mm) from the front of the engine back to the starter.  Nice to have an extra pair of hands here.  One guides the bit into the top bolt while the other ratchets off the bolt.

If you can, use brake cleaner aerosol with a long extension pipe to blast away grime and get a better grip.  You can also spray in some liquid lub to free up that bolt too.  If so, let it sit freshly lubricated for at least a couple of hours.  I usually do this and leave it overnight - especially for those hard to remove bolts like this one.

SO...

disconnect negative lead from battery;
clean and lub the two main starter bolts;
use at least 10" ratchet extension to access top bolt of starter;
use an 8mm allen driver for top bolt;
undo the wires when starter bolts are removed;

do reverse of above when reinstalling starter;

Best of luck,

JohnMc
