Land Rover Repair: Discovery 1997. auto fuel comsuption, diesel consumption, fuel comsuption

Question
Hi John
Previously I had a Disco  1 95, manual which average diesel consumption was 9,5 to 10 km per lire. Now I got a Disco 1 1997 auto, with a smaller turbo, which there is not turbo lag, but the diesel consumption went to the roof, averaging
14 litres  per 100 kilns, or  7.14 klms per litre of diesel, both engines are TDI 300. In every report I had read, the difference between manual & auto, are minimal.
Could you tell me if there any way to lower the diesel consumption, I must tell, even in a long hill I couldn't get more  than 70klm an hour, just two passenger and a little of camping gear,no air conditioner on.
Your answer will be appreciate

Regards

Robert

Answer
I think your fuel consumption is a bit low based upon my own experience.  Outside of good fuel, clean air an dfuel filters, proper tire pressures, etc. the fuel economy depends most of all on how you drive.

You also talk about lacking power, 70km on a hill . . . if that is the case there is something wrong other than basic things like I described above.

I myself have an older 2.5 non-turbo Land Rover.  For me, 70km on hills is a normal state of affairs.  You might want to take your car to a local LR specialist and see what he thinks.
