Land Rover Repair: 96 LR Disco sputtering in cold temps, engine radiator, radiator fan

Question
I have 125,000 miles on what has been a very reliable Disco, but have a nagging problem with the vehicle sputtering at low speeds when cold, and sometimes at highway speeds when there is modulation in the throttle (either lifting off the accelerator or depressing the accelerator), also in cold temps.  I've recently had the clutch for the engine/radiator fan replaced, since the local garage assessed that the non-movement of the old clutch in cold temperatures was causing the problems, and this helped for 30 days or so, but the sputtering has returned.

On a side note, in having the LR Dealership replace an ABS wheel sensor about a year ago, they had indicated that the engine may need a thorough valve-job in the near future, if the engine starts running roughly at high speeds.  Since the engine at that time was running smoothly, and the valve job was going to cost $2,700, I passed.

Again, the problems only occur in cold temperatures.  Once the engine warms to normal operating temps, the problem goes away.  Should I open the checkbook for the valve job, or could the problem be something more simple?

Answer
The problem you describe could be valves, or it could be ignition wires, or a number of other things.  If you doubt your dealer my best advice would be to look on www.rangerovers,net and see if there is an alternative within driving distance that has tools and know how.
