Land Rover Repair: 1995 Discovery Starter, starter solenoid, oil seeps

Question
I sent to start my disco today and nothing!, i have new battery, new plugs wires, dist cap, plenty of battery not start, i bought a new starter, any advice fro installation ease?

Answer
Hi Lawrence,

yes.  Get yourself a very, very long ratchet extension.  There are only 3 bolts holding the starter onto the engine and they are located in the worse possible place.

Remove the battery negative cable before you do any work.  Next, remove the starter solenoid wires.  Lastly, using the large extension above, remove the starter.

Make sure the main lead wire is very, very clean while the starter is removed.  If oil seeps into the wiring, it will rob you of needed power to start.

Don't throw away that old starter.  Rebuild it yourself.  Chances are, it may only be the solenoid.  Open and inspect the starter.  May be it only needs to be cleaned and lubricated.

You can buy a VW solenoid (Jetta) for about $65 or less.  This is the same solenoid as our Disco.  You'll have to drill out 2 new holes but if you do this with care, you'll save up to $250.  I did.

If you need actual instructions, send me an email and I'll send you what I have.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
