Land Rover Repair: Discovery II SLS, coil spring suspension, airsuspension

Question
Hello,

My 1999 Disco II has started venting its rear AirSuspension for no apparent reason, other than opening the rear door. I park, go shopping, get back - all is fine. I start loading the car and ...Pssst, I hear a valve open and down comes the left rear. I can be at home without using the car for a day, the next morning its fine, still up. I'll open the rear door, start loading and down its comes...

Only common factor is opening doors! But only the LEFT side vents itself...

Any ideas.. ?

Answer
If the hissing comes from the rear I'd guess there is a leak in one of the suspension air bags.  If the hiss comes from the front there may be a problem in the valve block.

The rear air bags are $350 or so each, and the valve block costs more.  And of course there are labor costs to repair it, and the work has to be done at a shop with the Autologic or T4 Land Rover test system to talk to the suspension computer.

Most people in your situation elect to convert to coil spring suspension in the rear.  That eliminates the possibility of further troubles.  You can buy conversion kits from Atlantic British ( 800 533 2210 ) for less than the cost to repair your present air system.
