Land Rover Repair: Discovery Starting Problem, position sensor, test system

Question
For the 7 years we've owned our 1997 Discovery we have had an intermittent starting problem which is now getting worse.  The engine turns over but doesn't catch.  We have tried a number of remedies.  Any suggestions?

Answer
I suggest you find a shop with the proper Land Rover test system and have them monitor the live data when the engine is cranking and not starting.  One or more reading will be awry and that should gove you a clue to fix the problem.

I will tell you that a common problem is a failing crank or cam position sensor.  Either one, if faulty, will prevent starting.
